Why can't I taste my vape? 8 reasons your flavour has gone.

Same liquid, same kit, but suddenly it tastes of… nothing. Or it's flat, muted, or just not as good as the first bottle. It's one of the most common things we get asked about in store.

Vapers often call it "vaper's tongue", but most of the time the cause is much simpler: your nose has got used to one flavour, your coil is tired, or your settings are off. Here's how to work out which one it is, and how to get your flavour back.

Short version? Here you go.

✓Most "lost flavour" is flavour fatigue: your senses tune out a flavour you vape all day.
✓Rotate between flavour families (fruit, mint, tobacco, dessert) to keep things tasting fresh.
✓A tired coil or pod is the next most likely cause, especially with sweet liquids.
✓Always prime a new pod or coil before your first puff.
✓Check your wattage and airflow suit your coil and vaping style.
✓Match your PG/VG ratio to your device and keep the pod clean.
Cause 1

Flavour fatigue, a.k.a. vaper's tongue.

If your liquid tastes fine to a friend but flat to you, this is almost certainly it.

Most of what we call "taste" actually comes from smell. When you vape the same flavour from morning to night, your senses get so used to it that they start to tune it out, a bit like no longer noticing the smell of your own house. The liquid hasn't changed; you've just stopped registering it.

It's especially common with all-day flavours you've used for months, and with strong menthol and ice liquids. Their cooling effect can make other, more delicate flavours seem quieter for a while afterwards.

The fix

Take a break from that flavour for a few days and switch to something completely different: from a fruit to a mint, or a mint to a tobacco. Most people find their favourite tastes "new" again when they come back to it.

Top tip

Keep two or three liquids from different flavour families on the go and swap between them through the day. It's the simplest way to stop flavour fatigue creeping back.

Cause 2

Your coil or pod is past its best.

Every coil has a lifespan. As the wick soaks up sweeteners and gunk from your e-liquid, it gets clogged and can't carry flavour as well. The first sign is usually a muted, "dull" taste, followed later by a burnt or harsh one.

Sweet, dark or dessert-style liquids wear coils out fastest. If your liquid tastes flat and it's been a week or two since you swapped, the coil is the prime suspect.

The fix

Fit a fresh pod or coil and see if the flavour comes back. Our guide on when to change the coil on a vape covers the tell-tale signs, and you'll find replacements in our coils & pods range.

Cause 3

The new coil wasn't primed.

Brand-new coil, but the flavour still isn't right? If the cotton wasn't fully soaked before you started vaping, parts of the wick can scorch on the first few puffs. Once that happens, the coil may never taste quite as clean as it should.

The fix

Fill a new pod and leave it for 5–10 minutes before your first puff, then take a few gentle draws without firing (if your device allows it). Follow our step-by-step guide on how to prime a vape coil.

Cause 4

Your wattage or airflow is off.

Every coil has a sweet spot. Run it too low and the liquid doesn't vaporise properly, so the flavour feels thin and weak. Run it too high and it can taste hot, harsh or slightly burnt.

Airflow matters too. Opening it right up gives a cooler, airier vape that can dilute flavour; closing it down a little concentrates it. On mouth-to-lung pod kits, a tighter draw usually gives the most flavour.

The fix

Start at the middle of the wattage range printed on your coil or pod, then nudge it up a watt or two at a time until the flavour peaks. Try closing the airflow a notch. Our guide to finding the perfect wattage explains it in more detail.

Your liquid probably hasn't changed. Your coil, your settings or your senses have.

Cause 5

The wrong PG/VG for your device.

PG (propylene glycol) is the part of e-liquid that carries flavour best; VG (vegetable glycerin) is thicker and makes more vapour. A thick 70/30 VG shortfill in a small MTL pod can struggle to soak the wick, which leads to weak flavour and dry hits. A thin, high-PG liquid in a big sub-ohm tank can taste weak and even leak.

The fix

Use nic salts or 50/50 liquids in MTL pod kits, and higher-VG shortfills in sub-ohm kits. Find out more in What is PG & VG in e-liquid?

Cause 6

A dirty pod or leftover liquid.

Changed flavour but can still taste the old one? Residue from a previous liquid can hang around in the pod, the coil and the mouthpiece for a surprisingly long time, especially strong menthols and aniseed flavours. Condensation build-up can also make the vape taste stale.

The fix

Use a fresh pod when switching between very different flavours, and wipe out the mouthpiece and pod contacts regularly. Our guide on how to clean your vape walks you through it.

Cause 7

Old or badly stored e-liquid.

E-liquid doesn't last forever. Heat, light and air slowly change the flavour, so a bottle that's lived on a sunny windowsill or in a hot car can taste flatter than a fresh one. Some liquids darken naturally over time, which is normal, but if a liquid smells off, it's time for a new bottle.

On the flip side, some shortfills (especially custards and desserts) can taste a bit muted straight after you add a nic shot and benefit from a little time to settle.

The fix

Store bottles upright, lids closed, somewhere cool and dark. Check the best-before date. For shortfills, see our guide on how to steep e-liquid.

Cause 8

Everyday things that dull flavour.

Your sense of taste isn't the same every day. Strong coffee, spicy food and a blocked nose from a cold can all make your vape taste flatter for a while. It usually sorts itself out once the cold clears or you've had a break from strong flavours.

Worth knowing

If you've also noticed food tasting different, or the change lasts more than a couple of weeks, it's worth having a chat with your pharmacist or GP, as it may not be your vape at all.

Keep it tasting fresh

How to build a flavour rotation.

The vapers who rarely complain about lost flavour tend to have one thing in common: they don't vape the same liquid all day, every day. You don't need a huge collection. Two or three bottles from different flavour families is plenty.

A simple three-bottle rotation

1. Your main flavour. The one you love most, whether that's a berry, a dessert or a tobacco.

2. A contrast flavour. Something from a totally different family. If your main is a sweet fruit, pick a tobacco or a plain mint. Browse our mint e-liquids or fruit e-liquids.

3. A "reset" flavour. A clean, simple liquid you can switch to whenever your main starts tasting flat. Many vapers use a mild mint or a straightforward tobacco for this.

Top tip

Not sure where to start? Our best fruit e-liquids guide breaks fruit flavours down into families, which makes it easy to pick a proper contrast.

Quick answers

Lost flavour: the questions we get asked.

What is vaper's tongue?

Vaper's tongue is the name vapers use for suddenly not being able to taste their e-liquid properly. In most cases it's flavour fatigue: your senses get used to a flavour you vape all the time and start to tune it out. Switching flavours for a few days usually brings it back.

How long does flavour fatigue last?

For most people, a few days on a completely different flavour is enough for their usual liquid to taste normal again. Rotating between two or three flavour families stops it coming back as quickly.

Why can I only taste my vape for the first few puffs?

If the flavour fades within a few puffs, check your coil and wick. A wick that can't keep up (often from liquid that's too thick, or a worn coil) gives a great first puff then a weaker one. Try a fresh pod and a 50/50 or nic salt liquid in MTL kits.

Does menthol make it harder to taste other flavours?

Strong menthol and ice liquids have a cooling effect, and many vapers find other flavours seem quieter straight after them. Their flavour can also linger in a pod, so use a fresh pod when switching from a menthol to something more delicate.

Why does my new coil taste of nothing?

A brand-new coil that hasn't been primed may not have a fully soaked wick, and some coils need a few puffs to "break in". Make sure you prime it for 5–10 minutes, start at a low-to-mid wattage and give it a little time.

Can old e-liquid lose its flavour?

Yes. Heat, light and air can change a liquid's flavour over time. Store bottles upright, closed and somewhere cool and dark, and check the best-before date on the bottle.
