Upcoming Ban of Disposable Vapes in the UK from June the 1st
The upcoming ban on single-use disposable vapes in the UK is set to take effect on June the 1st, 2025, marking a significant shift in the future of vaping. This decision, which will impact England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, comes in response to growing concerns over the rising popularity of vaping among young people and the impact these devices have on the environment. While the ban aims to reduce underage vaping and stop waste, many vapers are left wondering what this means for them and what alternatives will be available.
Our team at I Love Vapour have put together this post to tell you more about the upcoming ban of disposable vapes in the UK from June 1st, so you’re prepared for the date!
The 1st of June UK Ban on Disposable Vapes
From the 1st of June, 2025, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will implement a complete ban on disposable vapes. From this date, it will be illegal for businesses to sell or supply disposable vapes, also known as ‘single-use vapes’, meaning people won’t be able to purchase them anymore. Disposable vapes, or single-use vapes, are those that are neither rechargeable nor refillable and are discarded after use.
However, refillable or rechargeable vapes will not be banned. The decision to make the sale of disposable vapes illegal is part of the Government's response to two primary concerns: to protect children's health due to the rise in underage vaping, and the environmental impact of disposable vapes. Below, our team explores these issues in more detail.
Protecting Children's Health
A major reason why disposable vapes are being banned is to protect children’s health. Disposable vapes have been rising in popularity among young people, with the devices often marketed in bright, bold flavours and packaging that appeal to children and teenagers. Studies have shown that the number of children using vapes in the past three years has tripled, and usage among younger children has also increased, with 9% of 11 to 15-year-olds now using vapes.
Disposable vapes have been shown to be a key driver behind this rise in youth vaping, with the number of 11 to 17-year-old vapers using disposables increasing almost ninefold in the past two years. The long-term health impacts of vaping are still unknown, and the nicotine in disposables is highly addictive, which is a huge concern for parents. By banning the sale of disposable vapes, the government aims to prevent young people from being able to access these single-use vaping devices.
Environmental Impact
Alongside concerns about young people being able to access and use disposable vapes, the environmental impact of these devices is another major driving factor in their ban. Disposable vapes, which are used and then discarded, have contributed to a significant amount of waste, with millions being thrown away every week in the UK alone. According to research by Material Focus, the number of disposable vapes thrown away in the UK has surged from 1.3 million to nearly 5 million per week.
They are a huge source of waste, and when thrown away, they usually end up in landfills or contribute to litter, leading to environmental pollution. These vapes can also take hundreds of years to break down, causing long-term harm to the environment. Additionally, many disposables contain lithium batteries, which, when improperly disposed of, can pose a significant risk to the environment due to the potential for toxic chemicals to leach into the ground and water systems.
What Alternatives to Disposables Will There Be?
Whilst single-use disposable vapes will be banned from June 1st, there are many alternatives that vapers can turn to that offer similar convenience but aren’t classified as disposables. Brands like Lost Mary, Geek Bar, and Elux are now producing devices that offer the same convenience as disposables but are rechargeable, allowing you to enjoy your vape whenever you want and easily recharge it for continued use.
Additionally, many new refillable devices on the market provide the same simplicity and portability as disposables and will not be affected by the ban on June 1st. At I Love Vapour, we stock a large selection of fully compliant, legal vapes that offer a great alternative to disposables that you’ll be able to still purchase even after the ban on disposables comes into force from June the 1st 2025.
